Gunfighter
Gunfighter found its beginnings as a side project of Kansas City based Molly McGuire in the spring of 1998. Formed by singer/songwriter Jason Blackmore, Molly McGuire’s history includes a first 7” on Caulfield Records followed by a handful of singles on Chicago based Hit It! Records. After extensive touring throughout the country and playing with acts like The Jesus Lizard, Tool and Girls Against Boys, Molly McGuire was becoming quite the sought after act. It was at that point Hit It! put out the full length LP, “Sisters Of...” which received immediate attention. Molly continued to tour coast to coast and shortly thereafter went into the studio to record “Lime” with producer Ken Andrews (Failure, Year of the Rabbit). The band soon signed to Epic Records, which opened them to some wonderful opportunities. Such as touring with The Melvins, The Jim Rose Circus Side Show and sharing the second stage of the last Lollapalooza tour with the likes of Failure and Skeleton Key. Then there was Gunfighter…Gunfighter started as a bong hit basement project and became a breath of fresh air for the Molly boys. Blackmore found Gunfighter to be a vent to new ideas that didn’t quite fit the Molly mold. With this newfound creative outlet the band immediately went into record the new material at Train Wreck Studios, owned by hometown buds Season to Risk. Shortly thereafter they went to Red House Studios to record some old and new Molly songs, with engineer Ed Rose (Get Up Kids, Reggie and The Full Effect). When all of this was completed, it was decided to push forward with Gunfighter. Combining songs from the Gunfighter recordings as well as the Molly recordings they compiled their first full length cd ”Pro-Electric,” produced by Rose/Blackmore. This cd was scheduled for release on the now defunct label LooseGroove Records (Queens of the Stone Age) and was later released in Nov. 2000 on the bands own label, High Noon Records, but not before they shared the Wetlands stage with Queens at a CMJ Loosegroove showcase in New York. Deciding it was time for a change of scenery, Blackmore moved to sunny San Diego in the fall of 2000. The follow up full length cd ”High Noon”, containing tunes from the Train Wreck and Red House Studios sessions, was released on Dallas based Idol Records the following year. Along with James Armbrust (bass), Blackmore assembled a new San Diego line up featuring Midwest pals, Rob Smith (Traindodge) on drums and Mike Tobin (Stick) on guitar. Gunfighter recorded two new songs with Gar Wood(Fishwife, Tanner) in Jan.2002, which was later released on Ascetic Records as a split Ep with Traindodge. At this point they took the act on the road playing such shows as the 2002 Idol Records SXSW showcase. With the help of Gar and Pall Jenkins(Black Heart Procession) the third full length cd,”The Serpents Serenade,” was recorded. Gunfighter has recently been playing live throughout Southern California with the likes of Year of The Rabbit and No Knife. Gunfighter is currently awaiting the release of “The Serpents Serenade,” on High Noon Records / distributed by Cargo Music and plan on thoroughly touring the states following its May 2003 release.
